One thing I know: regardless of where the fault lies for the economic problems, I find consolation in knowing that help is here. My help, your help does not lie in who can or cannot fix the problems in this economy. Where does our help come from? Our help comes from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth.

What hills were the psalmist referring to when he said, “I will lift up my eyes to the hills”? (See Psalm 121).  It is one of the many psalms known as “Songs of Ascent.” These were sung at various stages along the way as the Jews would journey up to the temple for the annual feasts.

After Solomon had built and dedicated the temple, he prayed a prayer that God honored (I Kings 8:35ff). The temple in Jerusalem was home to the ark of the Lord (the ark represented the presence of the Lord amongst the people.  As Psalm 121 was sung on their journey up towards Jerusalem, they were not looking to the hills themselves, but to the Maker of the hills, of the heaven and the earth, whose presence was represented by the ark in the temple.

I find consolation in knowing that I can rely on the Maker. I know where my help comes from. I’m not trying to find it in a system that has failed, is failing, and will fail. I want to rest and rely on the Maker of heaven and earth, who has everything that I need. For before man was here, and as long as man has been around, the heavens and the earth were here.  The heavens have been of old and the earth (I Peter 3:5). The heavens have not folded. The earth has not collapsed or caved in, and the God who created them is still in power, still in control, still on His throne and is still Lord. Psalm 104:5 (NIV) says, “He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.”

Man has power to replace governments, vote politicians in and out of office.  They build skyscrapers, go up to space, and even fly to the moon, but none of us has the power to move heaven and earth. No one has the power to create daylight, hold back the darkness, control the wind, keep the seas at bay, or stay the seasons.  But the Lord of heaven and earth has demonstrated time and again, that he has the power to make them, change them, or stop them.

Who are you looking to for the help that you need? If you happened to have been looking elsewhere, I want to remind you and to encourage you to look no longer.  Look to the Maker of heaven and earth. He has never had to foot a repair bill to fix the heavens or the earth. He has never had to plug or patch them up, and they are still here. God has designed it to be so. Why not look for help to someone like the Lord, who holds all things together by His word, and who can guarantee and back up all that he says? Look to Him and trust Him with everything you have and all that you are and hope to be.
